Preventing Terrorism
Whilst Surrey is a low risk county for terrorist activity, we still need to be alert to tensions and extremist groups in our communities. You can help with this.
If you see something suspicious or if you’re unsure about a person’s behaviour or activities, your information could be vital. Call the anti-terrorism hotline on 0800 789 321 to report your concerns in the strictest confidence. No call is a waste of time. If you suspect it, report it.
If it’s an emergency, dial 999.
Internet-based terrorism
The internet is used by some people to promote terrorism and violent extremism and to corrupt vulnerable individuals.
Some examples of illegal terrorist or extremist content include:
- speeches or essays calling for racial or religious violence
- videos of violence with messages of ‘glorification’ or praise for the attackers
- chat forums with postings calling for people to commit acts of terrorism or violent extremism
- messages intended to stir up hatred against any religious or ethnic group
- bomb-making instructions
Click the ‘report internet terrorism’ link on the right to visit a dedicated webpage where you can report online terrorist content you think might be illegal, or which you find offensive, to a specialist police department.
How Surrey Police tackles terrorism
We routinely gather, and act on, information to combat crime and anti-social behaviour – public protection from terrorism is no exception. We work closely with colleagues nationally so we can pick up on any trends across the country.
Working alongside partner organisations such as local councils and voluntary organisations, we also help individuals who are vulnerable to being drawn into terrorist activity to deter them.
The Prevent strategy
Surrey Police is working towards the Government’s Prevent strategy which aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting all forms of terrorism. The Prevent strategy has three aims:
- Challenging the ideology that supports terrorism and those who promote it
- Protecting vulnerable people from being drawn into terrorist-related activity
- Supporting sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation
