Services provided by Surrey Police
Surrey Police provide a wide range of services to the public, some are free, some will incur a fee.
Air Support - Helicopter
Surrey Police's Air Support unit is equipped with an EC135 Advanced Police Helicopter. This type and model is generally recognised as the most suitable aircraft for use by the police, and is currently in service with 15 forces throughout the UK. It is crewed by officers from Surrey, and flown by pilots with extensive military and civil aviation experience.
Dogs
Police dogs are a huge asset to the police service. Not only do our canine friends help us to deter criminals and safeguard the public (would you want to take on a German Shepherd?), they also offer us something quite unique: an amazing sense of smell.
Firearms
The Surrey Police Tactical Firearms Unit is a highly trained unit that is there to protect the public. About 46 Surrey officers are trained in the use of firearms. Some carry out protection and containment duties. The vast majority of members of the Tactical Firearms Unit are routinely armed and carry out routine patrol duties. The latter have received more specialised training and are used in serious and lengthy incidents.
Mobile Support
By their very nature, vehicle pursuits are hazardous, particularly around urban, built-up areas. The potential for accidents or injury is relatively high, and it is for this very reason that we train our mobile officers to the highest standards. Ultimately, the aim of the Surrey Police Mobile Support Unit and Driver Training School is to minimise risk to the public and our officers; reduce the number of pursuits; and to enhance pursuit management nationally.
Scientific Support
Say the word Forensics, and often a particular image will leap to mind: it might be fingerprints, or a DNA strand, perhaps a scene from Silent Witness or Inspector Morse. There are many elements to police forensics, however, each in their own right used to help complete a picture that might otherwise remain as a scattered jigsaw.
Surrey Police Museum
It is over 150 years old, and throughout its time Surrey Police has coped with numerous amalgamations, successions, reorganisations and boundary changes. At the Surrey Police museum in Guildford, you can see the whole history of the force.
